Anyone who's undertaken an extensive, and often expensive, home remodeling or home improvement project knows about the multitude of options available at every turn in the road. Replacement windows are no exception, as there are many options available. They can be made out of wood, fiberglass, or vinyl, and can have various ratings on energy efficiency. As with shopping for a particular product, it can be very helpful to check out the consumer rating for replacement windows. In the process, one will hopefully glean enough information to know that a good, helpful decision is being made about which product to use.

When shopping for windows, one is likely to hear several name brands mentioned, most notably Anderson, Pella, and Marvin. The "big three" of replacement windows, so to speak, make superior products that test excellently. Perhaps even more important than knowing about the brand, however, is becoming familiar with the features and drawbacks of each type of window material are. In order to get a good consumer rating for replacement windows, the windows needed to pass rigorous tests over several months, and testers found several key differences between the different options.

To start with, wood and fiberglass were clearly the winners. They performed the best in several tests and had the least amount of leakage. On top of the performance aspect, they are also aesthetically pleasing. All of these things helped wood or fiberglass win an excellent consumer rating for replacement windows. These materials, however, are quite a bit more expensive than their vinyl counterparts, which didn't test as well, but are still hugely popular due to their cost-efficiency.

Tax credits are always a big draw, and the federal tax credit that promotes energy-efficiency is no exception. Basically, if you replace your old windows with windows that have a high energy-effieciency rating, you qualify for a federal tax credit equal to thirty percent of the product cost. You will need provide documentaion including receipts and proof of energy star rating, and installation costs aren't eligible for the credit. Even with all the headache of itemizing and proving all your purchases, however, taking advantage of this tax credit is a big deal to many consumers, and is one of the reasons for a high consumer rating for replacement windows overall.
